The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) announced that it was forced to stop all its services in Rafah, south of the Gaza Strip in light of the “Israeli” attack, noting that more than a million people were forced to flee the city “in search of safety that they will never find.”

The Agency’s Commissioner-General, Philippe Lazzarini, explained, in a post on the X website, yesterday evening, Saturday, June 1, 2024, that all 36 UNRWA shelter centers in Rafah are now empty, stressing that these are the places where people seek refuge and should enjoy protection in the future all times under the United Nations flag.

Lazzarini said that the agency was forced to stop its health services in Rafah and other vital services. He added that UNRWA is currently operating from Khan Yunis, south of the Gaza Strip, in addition to the central regions, where there are now 1.7 million people.

The Commissioner-General explained that the agency relaunched its operations in Khan Yunis despite the damage to all its facilities. He pointed out that the humanitarian margin in Gaza is still shrinking as UNRWA was allowed to enter only less than 450 aid trucks over the past three weeks, stressing that this is a negligible amount compared to Gaza’s needs, which are no less than 600 trucks per day of humanitarian aid, fuel, and commercial shipments.

In a related context, the head of the Municipal Emergency Committee in North Gaza, Naji Sarhan, announced that Jabalia and Beit Hanoun are two disaster areas due to the destruction.
