The World Food Program announced yesterday, Wednesday, the suspension of its activities in the Gaza Strip until further notice; after a vehicle belonging to it was shot near an Israeli checkpoint, on Tuesday evening.
For months, Palestinian and international relief organizations have been complaining about the lack of protection for their teams; which led to the killing and wounding of humanitarian workers by Israeli fire; which increases the suffering of the Palestinians in light of their urgent need for life-saving assistance.
The United Nations program said in a statement that it announces the suspension of the movement of its employees in Gaza until further notice; “after a team belonging to us was shot on the evening of August 27, a few meters from an Israeli checkpoint in the Gaza Valley Bridge.”
He explained that “the team was returning from a mission to Kerem Shalom (crossing) with two armored vehicles belonging to the World Food Program, after accompanying a convoy of trucks carrying humanitarian aid to the central region of Gaza.”
He added that although the team’s vehicle clearly displayed the organization’s logo and despite having obtained several permits from the occupation forces to approach, it was directly shot at while heading towards an occupation army checkpoint.
He reported that “the vehicle was hit by at least ten bullets, while none of the employees who were on board were injured.”
Since October 7, 2023, “Israel” has been waging a war on Gaza with American support, which has resulted in more than 134,000 Palestinian martyrs and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 10,000 missing amid massive destruction and famine that has claimed the lives of dozens of children.
