The UN Special Rapporteur on Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, Alice Gill Edwards, called for expedited investigations into the deaths of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons.
This came in a statement to journalists in Geneva on the sidelines of her attendance at the 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council, which began last week and continues until April 4.
The Special Rapporteur noted that the entry into force of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza was a positive development, criticizing the ill-treatment of detainees in Israeli prisons, especially after October 7.
Edwards added, “Many Palestinian prisoners were released as part of the exchange agreement, some of whom were arbitrarily detained and were subjected to extremely difficult conditions during their detention.”
She described the prisoners’ condition, saying, “Some of them appeared extremely weak and their health was poor. The issue of torture must be investigated, and independent and impartial investigations must be conducted into these cases.”
