Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his gratitude to the leadership of Hamas movement for releasing a Russian citizen as part of the recent prisoner exchange deal, stressing that “the movement treated him humanely.”
Putin’s remarks came during his meeting with his citizen, Alexander Trufanov, and his family on Wednesday, according to Anadolu Agency.
Putin said, “The strong relations between Russia and the Palestinian people contributed to Trufanov’s release.”
He added, “I believe we must express our gratitude to the political leadership of Hamas for responding to our appeal and undertaking this humanitarian act” (referring to the release of his citizen, Alexander Trufanov).
While Putin did not offer any political assessment of the overall situation in the region during his meeting with Trufanov on Wednesday evening, he indicated that Moscow “will do its utmost to continue to replicate these successes,” referring to the process of releasing the remaining prisoners in Gaza.
Alexander Trufanov was released last February after nearly 500 days of captivity by Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, in the Gaza Strip, since October 7, 2023.
