The UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health, Tlaleng Mofokeng, condemned the Israeli attack on Private Baptist Hospital, the last functioning hospital in the northern Gaza Strip.
Mofokeng said: “Months of brutal violence continue to make it difficult to provide healthcare services in an already weakened system. I am appalled to know that the war on hospitals, healthcare providers, and civilians continues, making the provision of health services even more impossible.”
Private Baptist Hospital was bombed by Israeli forces on April 13, destroying the emergency department and killing a child due to lack of adequate care.
She added, “With the latest assault on the health system, healthcare options, especially emergency care, for the people of Gaza have been reduced to zero, and Israel continues to operate with impunity.”
She noted that health workers, as the primary responders in providing health services, are subjected to harassment, intimidation, and daily death while trying to save the lives of the Palestinian people.
She emphasized the need to protect health care facilities and workers under international law.
“This is completely unacceptable,” Mofokeng said. “The people of Gaza deserve dignity and the restoration of health services after more than 18 months of attacks and the lack of access to aid and medical supplies to the Strip since the beginning of the Israeli attacks.”
She reiterated her call on the international community and world leaders to use all means at their disposal to end the aggression and save the lives and dignity of the people of Gaza, who have survived these atrocities for more than a year and a half.
She added, “I appeal to your humanity and whatever remaining capacity you have to act to preserve the people of Gaza.”
