UN Secretary-General António Guterres,on Friday , June 27, said that the distribution of US aid in the Gaza Strip is unsafe and kills people, and that UN-led humanitarian efforts are being "strangled," with aid workers themselves starving.
At a press conference in New York on Friday, Guterres added that searching for food in the Strip should not be a death sentence, and that "Israel, as the occupying power, is required under international law to authorize and facilitate humanitarian relief."
He pointed out that families in Gaza have been displaced repeatedly, and are now confined to less than a fifth of Gaza's territory. Even these shrinking spaces are under threat. Bombs are falling on tents, on families, on those who have nowhere left to flee. People are being killed simply for trying to feed themselves and their families.
He emphasized that Israel has been blocking the entry of shelter materials and fuel for vital services for three months. Doctors are forced to choose who gets the last jar of medicine or the last ventilator, while aid workers themselves are starving. This situation cannot be normalized.
Guterres explained that a handful of medical supplies crossed into Gaza earlier this week, the first from the United Nations in months, adding that "this only underscores the sheer scale of the crisis.
