In a move that sparked a wave of condemnation, yesterday, four assistant professors at the City University of New York (CUNY) announced that they were fired from their jobs at Brooklyn College due to their pro-Palestine activism. This comes at a time when Congress is investigating the university's president regarding the campus's stance on sensitive political issues.
According to The Intercept, the four professors were surprised by the administration's decision, even though their department heads had previously recommended their reinstatement and had even allocated them classes for the fall semester, some of which were on student waiting lists. The affected professors confirmed that they maintained good professional relationships and received excellent student evaluations.
The university did not provide an official reason for terminating its relationship with the professors, all of whom taught at Brooklyn College, and did not explain its decision in a request for comment from The Intercept.
"We're filling in the blanks because they didn't tell us anything," said one of the four affected professors, who requested anonymity for fear of defamation and harassment. "The only reason we know it's related to Palestine is because that's the only thing we have in common."
She explained that she received the termination notice from human resources, even though the academic department itself had approved her schedule, which she considered evidence that the decision "had nothing to do with our professional competence, but rather carried a veiled threat."
