September 21 Revolution represented a great turning point and a new birth for the Ummah on different foundations from all previous uprisings and movements. It emerged as a roaring current bearing characteristics and features unmatched by any other revolution, and was truly the only exception in a time of setbacks and defeats.
While the Arab Spring revolutions were aborted under the influence of foreign interventions and the conspiracies of opposing powers, and their countries remained mired in chaos and dependency, September 21 Revolution forged its path with a steely resolve. Neither conspiracies nor the fierce wars waged by the world's most powerful countries could undermine its resilience. It proved that it was not a passing wave of anger, nor a revolution of an elite seeking power, but rather a genuine popular revolution, inspired by a Quranic vision.
A Quranic Revolution
Its most notable characteristic is that it is a Quranic revolution, drawing its values, path, and project from the source of the Holy Book. It is led by a man who made the Quran his first and final authority. Thus, the influence of Quranic guidance is evident in every decision and direction. It is a revolution that restores the Quran to its natural place as a constitution for life, making it a compass for the nation and a source of assurance. It becomes a revolution of moral values as much as it is political and social.
The revolution set goals for itself stemming from the Quranic vision. Therefore, its steps were realistic and achievable, gradual and wise, and moving in accordance with God's laws of change.
What distinguishes it is that it was not a revolution of a sect, class, or party. Rather, it involved peasants and workers, rich and poor, academics and illiterate, men and women, civilians and soldiers. It was a complete picture of the Yemeni people in all their components, and from this, it gained its authenticity and popular depth. It was a complete picture of the Yemeni people, united under one banner. This popular cohesion made it unbreakable and protected it from becoming an elitist project or a personal ambition. It was truly a revolution for the entire Ummah.
A Comprehensive Civilizational Project
Its goal was not merely to overthrow a system of corruption and corporatism, but rather it carried a broad civilizational and renaissance project, the "Hand to Build, Hand to Protect" project heralded by the martyr Saleh al-Samad. This project would place Yemen on the path of construction in the economy, culture, education, administration, and military, and forge an independent civilizational identity stemming from the authenticity of this people and their Quranic history.
At a time when foreign intervention had become the norm for any change, this revolution was a rare exception. It was driven by self-sufficiency and popular funding, and protected itself without foreign tutelage or protection. And here it is, despite world wars—despite its short lifespan—it has persisted with strength, and it continues to stand, even achieving astonishing victories.
The revolution was unique in having a single, clear leadership, represented by Sayyed Abdul-Malik Badr al-Din al-Houthi, whom the people recognized as a sincere leader, combining Quranic insight with jihadi courage. Behind him, a people described by the Prophet as "the people of wisdom and faith" proved in the arena of steadfastness that they are a miraculous people, capable of confronting the most powerful forces on earth.
The skill of Quranic leadership combined with the greatness of the Yemeni people, forming a rare duo in history, producing a revolution with solid foundations, a cohesive structure, and impervious to fragmentation
This necessarily means that it is a revolution of values with a committed, moral, and Islamic Arab national conscience. These values and morals are the guarantees of its continuity and the preservation of its gains. They are what give the people confidence that it will achieve all its goals, based on Allah's Quranic laws. When the revolution moves to build its internal reality on various levels—intellectually, culturally, educationally, psychologically, socially, economically, militarily, and administratively—while simultaneously mobilizing with tremendous force to confront the fiercest and most cunning, tyrannical, wealthy, powerful, and armed opponents, this means that it is a revolution that carries within it the guarantees of its continuity, survival, strength, and sustainability. This is something not found in many revolutions.
The revolution did not confine itself to the borders of Yemen; rather, it embraced the concerns of the Ummah and placed the Palestinian cause at the peak of its priorities. Today, Yemen has become a difficult factor in the equation of the conflict with the Zionist enemy, and a source of annoyance for the forces of arrogance, which have never seen a besieged and attacked country launch million-man marches in support of Gaza or strike enemy ports with missiles and drones.
This cultural inclusiveness is what worried the major powers. A revolution that seeks not only to change the head of government, but also to change the structure of society on Quranic foundations, is bound to arouse the concern of the arrogant powers and prompt them to mobilize all their forces to thwart it.
Immunity from Penetration
Unlike many revolutions that consume their own people, September 21 Revolution maintained its internal purity. It did not descend into bloody liquidations, but rather opened the door to forgiveness and tolerance, showing no leniency toward traitors. It is a revolution of "compassionate among themselves, severe against their enemies."
Despite the attempts of its enemies, the revolution remained impenetrable, thanks to its intellectual foundation, the sacrifices of its people, and the awareness of its masses. It has built itself an innate immunity that protects it from deviation and enables it to distinguish the loyal from the traitorous.
The greatest testimony to the revolution's success is that it has worried Washington and Tel Aviv and delighted the oppressed everywhere. It is a revolution that has held the Yemeni people high and granted them a sense of pride and dignity. Perhaps this spiritual and moral achievement alone is sufficient to confirm that whatever goals have not been achieved will inevitably come.
The Balance Between Internal and External Affairs
Nevertheless, the revolution did not neglect internal needs. It achieved a rare balance between the national dimension and the Islamic national dimension, neither forgetting the homeland nor abandoning the Ummah's issues.
September 21 Revolution is not a passing phase in Yemeni history; rather, it is a pivotal event that reshaped Yemen's relationship with itself, its nation, and the world. It is an authentic Quranic revolution, realistic in its goals, unifying its people, immune to infiltration, rooted in the nation's conscience, and moving toward building a comprehensive civilizational project. Because it has disturbed the arrogant and delighted the oppressed, it is worthy of survival and victory, no matter how long the night of aggression.
One of its distinguishing features is that it is an effective, successful, and influential revolution.
It is significant, and it has brought about and continues to bring about a significant shift in awareness and concepts, coinciding with a shift in reality and trends. Many of its goals have either been achieved, are on their way to being achieved, or have been prevented by factors beyond the control of the revolution and its leadership. However, the awareness, spiritual, and psychological state are ready to accomplish these goals as soon as external obstacles are removed.
Fixed Positions
Over the past 11 years, the epics of September 21 popular revolution have become clear domestically and internationally. The Yemeni state now possesses the freedom to take whatever decision is necessary to build a militarily, economically, and politically strong Yemen that preserves its faith-based identity. This has been reflected in all its positions, both domestically and internationally.
On the domestic front, Yemen embarked on a unified popular front, supported by a faithful, divine leadership and a great Quranic approach, charting the course of a new life for Yemen. It began by restoring and consolidating its faith-based identity through its domestic stances in confronting aggression and blockade. By the grace of Allah, it was able to achieve a historic victory over the forces of aggression and rebuild state institutions by creating a strong army equipped with an arsenal of advanced weapons to protect its people and homeland. It also gradually rebuilt state institutions, leading to radical changes.
On the external front, Yemen's positions on all Arab and Islamic issues, foremost among them the Palestinian cause, have been steadfast. During this period, Yemen has provided the most remarkable examples of support and assistance to the Palestinian people at various political and economic levels, including its military stance on land, sea, and air. Yemen has succeeded in humiliating American-Israeli arrogance and making Yemen a focus of admiration for the free people of the world.
