The number of victims as a result of the explosion of cluster bombs, mines and bombs left by the US-Saudi-Emirati aggression coalition has increased to more than 8,104 since 2015 in various governorates.
The head of the Executive Center for Mine Action, Ali Safra, confirmed in a speech today, Wednesday, during the inauguration of the first conference of the Partnership for Mine Action in the capital, Sana’a, that the aggression used prohibited weapons, including cluster bombs and missiles, which are prohibited in accordance with international conventions.
He indicated that the Mine Action Center suffers from a lack of support, budgets, and the lack of supplies and devices designated for dealing with mines, which impedes work in the field. He indicated that there are mine-specific devices and equipment that are still being held in Djibouti and need the advocacy of UN and international organizations to enter these devices.
Safra said, “The Executive Center is facing a terrible catastrophe, as well as new types of air and cluster strikes, at the level of all governorates, starting with the capital’s secretariat and ending with the farthest village and border area.”
He explained that the number of mines, cluster bombs and remnants of war discovered during the past year 2022 amounted to 20,252 mines and bombs. Cluster bombs and mines widely affected the agricultural sector, as 783,690 farms were directly damaged, with a total loss of 1,880,856 dollars.
He added: 132,100 hectares were also damaged, with varying losses amounting to $3,645,960, stressing the need for direct cooperation and coordination to improve the level of work and benefit from experiences and developments in the field of demining.
