UN Renews Commitment to American Position on Yemen Conflict

In a recent development, the United Nations has renewed its commitment to the American position on the Yemen conflict. This position involves continuing aggression, blockade, and depriving the Yemeni people of their legitimate rights, including salaries, by linking them to political dictates. The UN representative in Yemen, Hans Grundberg, has stated that the United Nations is “the main mediator” and that negotiations must take place between Sana’a and mercenaries.

Grundberg claimed in statements to the American “Associated Press” agency that “there is unity among international actors about the need to resolve the Yemeni conflict, as well as about the fact that the United Nations is the main mediator.” He added that talks sponsored by Oman between Sana’a and Riyadh “may support UN mediation efforts; To formulate a proposal for a ceasefire and start political talks between Yemeni parties.”

These statements clearly translate into full UN commitment to the American position that deals with aggression against Yemen as an “internal conflict.” Grundberg’s speech coincides with repeated statements by US envoy to Yemen Tim Lenderking claiming that negotiations between Sana’a and mercenaries are “the only way” to achieve peace and address the humanitarian crisis in Yemen.

Grundberg’s statements carry a clear tone of extortion with “international consensus”, which is a title used by the United States frequently in all its positions rejecting peace in Yemen. This is done in order to cut off any efforts made outside the system subject to American influence.

Grundberg’s speech, which coincides with statements by the US envoy, shows that the United States is clearly seeking to regain control over the course of solution efforts. This is done by thwarting the role of Omani mediators and reducing their value, and on the other hand, pushing towards imposing the United Nations as a single main channel for any understandings. This means subjecting those understandings to American and British dictates and desires, thus cutting off any opportunities for reaching real positive agreements.

Omani mediation succeeded during the past period in breaking many barriers and removing many complications that were created by the United Nations at negotiation tables over past years. Omani mediators opened a direct negotiation channel between Sana’a and Riyadh. This is something that was avoided by the United Nations and was keen to always present mercenaries as an opposite party to Sana’a. It is not coincidental that American-UN stubbornness today revolves around this point specifically.
