Euro-Mediterranean: The targeting of Ras Issa Port in Yemen calls for immediate investigation

The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor said that the US attack on Ras Issa Port in Hodeidah, western Yemen, constituted an unlawful use of force that warrants immediate investigation and accountability.

The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor explained in a statement issued on Friday that the nature of the targeted, and the heavy human losses resulting from the attack raise serious suspicions of a war crime under international law.

The Monitor condemned the US forces’ failure to take any measures to protect civilians and failed to notify the port’s management, its workers, or any relevant parties before carrying out the attack.

The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor considered the official US justifications for the attack to be a blatant disregard for international humanitarian law, clearly violating the principles of distinction, proportionality, and military necessity.

The Monitor also condemned the US’s illegal use of armed force instead of adopting any approach aimed at de-escalating tensions.

The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor called on the relevant international bodies to open an immediate and independent investigation into the attack on Ras Issa Port, take legal action against the perpetrators, and ensure justice for the victims and their families.
