Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian confirmed that the memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the United States will be officially signed this coming Friday in the Swiss city of Geneva.
Speaking on the sidelines of a national conference, Pezeshkian addressed the measures taken yesterday to conclude the agreement aimed at ending the war between Iran and the United States. He stated, "This process was conducted through full coordination, and the signing of this operation has been approved for Friday."
"Without the support and guidance of the Supreme Leader, we would not have been able to achieve this breakthrough represented by the memorandum of understanding," Pezeshkian added, noting that the specific clauses and details of the MoU with the United States will be presented at a later time.
When asked about the absence of public protests against the country's administration during the war, the President responded: "This stability was achieved thanks to the measures and efforts exerted by the governors and state officials. Everyone stepped up to help. While the enemy believed that the country would collapse during the war, and that the market and the system would break down, the situation was managed effectively, and that collapse did not happen."
In the same context, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that "a meeting is likely to take place in Switzerland on Friday between the heads of the Iranian and American negotiating delegations to sign the memorandum of understanding."
In statements broadcast on Iranian state television, Araghchi added: "Following the signing of the memorandum of understanding with America, the first round of formal negotiations will commence." He noted, "We are planning the trajectory of the negotiations and the implementation of the agreement on a baseline of total mistrust, given America's previous violations of its commitments."
Araghchi clarified that the memorandum of understanding "has been finalized; a portion of its clauses will be implemented today, while the remainder will take effect after it is signed on Friday." He explained that the agreement consists of two stages: "The first stage is the signed memorandum of understanding, and the second stage is a 60-day round of negotiations, which is subject to extension."
The Iranian Foreign Minister concluded by noting that "issues regarding the nuclear file and the lifting of sanctions will be deliberated during the final agreement phase, and it is entirely possible that a consensus will be reached on those matters."
