The United Nations estimates, today, Thursday, that rebuilding the Gaza Strip after the end of the war will require years and billions of dollars.

The United Nations said in its statements: There are more than 42 million tons of rubble in Gaza.

It added: “This is equivalent to 14 times the amount of rubble accumulated in Gaza between 2008 and the beginning of the current war.”

The United Nations explained that the amount of destruction is more than 5 times the amount left by the battle of Mosul in Iraq between 2016 and 2017.

It pointed out that removing this amount of rubble will take 14 years and cost 1.2 billion dollars.

The UN said: “An estimated 2.3 million tons of rubble in Gaza contain asbestos, an internationally banned substance that causes cancer, and there are fears of the spread of leishmaniasis, a parasitic skin disease that can be fatal if left untreated due to unexploded bombs, hazardous contaminated materials and human remains under the rubble.”

“Reprocessing just half of this uncontaminated rubble would be enough to rebuild Gaza’s entire road network,” it added.

Officials suggested it could be “used in sea defence structures such as breakwaters to protect against coastal erosion and flooding.

Other potential uses include paving blocks for sidewalks and drainage channels.” Officials explained that rebuilding destroyed homes in the Gaza Strip could take until at least 2040 and could take decades.

“More than 1.8 million people currently need shelter in Gaza,” the UN added. It noted that satellite images show that more than 70 percent of homes, schools, hospitals and businesses in Gaza have been destroyed or flattened.
