The World Health Organization’s envoy to Gaza, Richard Peppercon, said that the closure of  Rafah land crossing in the south of the Strip prevented medical evacuations of at least two thousand patients.

Reuters quoted Peppercon as saying that Rafah crossing, before its closure, was recording the departure of approximately 50 critically ill patients every day.

This means that since its closure on May 7, at least two thousand people have not been able to leave Gaza to receive necessary medical care.

He pointed out that at least 10,000 people need to be evacuated from Gaza, “and this number is less than the number who need critical care for war trauma and chronic diseases.”

He stressed “the need to open more roads for medical evacuation in emergency situations, expressing his hope that  Kerem Shalom crossing and other roads for medical evacuation will be opened, to facilitate the travel of patients to hospitals in Jerusalem and the West Bank.”

A few days ago, five children were transferred from the northern Gaza Strip to Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, south of the Strip, and they were about to leave for treatment, but until now they are still waiting for evacuation, according to what “Peppercon” said.

Two days ago, the director of the government media office in Gaza, Ismail Al-Thawabta, reported that the destruction and closure of Rafah land crossing “deprived 25,000 sick and wounded people from traveling to receive treatment abroad, and also hindered the entry of more than 15,000 aid trucks into the Strip.”

The aggression against Rafah caused the closure of the land crossing on the Gaza border with Egypt, which was a main route for delivering food and other supplies, in addition to being an evacuation point for civilians afflicted with serious diseases or injured people.

The occupation continues its genocidal war in the Gaza Strip, amid indifference to UN resolutions and human rights calls demanding an immediate end to the aggression, and an end to committing further war crimes against civilians in the Gaza Strip, including women and children.
